Mohammed Shami was bought by Delhi Daredevils using Right to Match card for RS 3 Crore. Because of his personal problems, the experienced fast bowler could not play many matches. In the 2018 edition of IPL, Shami played only 4 matches and took only 3 wickets with an economy of 10.40 runs per over.

Before the 2019 auction, Delhi Daredevils decided to release Gambhir and other top players in the squad which led to such poor performances in IPL 2018 edition finishing last. With Shami facing personal problems and poor performances, franchises may not select him during IPL 2019 auction.
