New Zealand stunned the defending Champions Australia in the opening match of the Super 12 stage by 89 runs played at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney on October 22. It was a dominating performance by the Kiwis side as they outplayed Australia in all departments.
Thanks to a quickfire 42 off deliveries by Finn Allen, Devon Conway 92*, Kane Williamson, and James Neesham knock, New Zealand posted 200 for 3 in 20 overs. It was a superb performance by the Kiwi side right from the word go not allowing the Australian bowlers to settle.
Chasing 201 runs to win, the Australian batters never get going as David Warner, Aaron Finch and Mitchell fell cheaply inside the first six overs. Glenn Phillips took a stunning diving catch to dismiss Marcus Stoinis leaving Australia struggling. Tim David, and Matthew Wade all fell cheaply as Australia never looked in the chase.
Glenn Maxwell looked decent but played a rash reverse sweep to be bowled by Ish Sodhi. Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa fell to Trent Boult. Pat Cummins was the last batter dismissed as Australia lost the match by 89 runs.
It was a superb performance by the Kiwi side as their record on Australian soil has not been great. They dominated defending Champions Australia with an all-round performance. Their last win across all formats in Australia was in 2011.
For his 92* off 58 balls and 2 catches, Devon Conway was named the player of the match award.
Here are some of the reactions:
This is a huge win for New Zealand I always thought whoever won this game would go through in this group.

Itās been 13 long years since New Zealand last one a game in white-ball cricket in Australia. Theyāve got a very good score of over 200 runs against the Aussies now. Could this be the day for the Black Caps? #AUSvNZ #NZvAUS #T20worldcup22

We were told a bad FIFA World Cup match lasts 90 minutes, while a bad 50-over world cup game goes for 7 hours. T20 was supposed to fix it. A game like this at the SCG is a poor advertisement for the game of Cricket.
Great show by New Zealand & congratulations to them.#NZvAUS

Devon Conway stars for New Zealand with the bat
It was a dominating performance by the New Zealand side right from the word go. Finn Allen and Conway provided a flying start putting on 56 runs in just 4.1 overs. At the end of the first six overs, New Zealand made 65 for 1. After the field restrictions, Conway and Williamson kept the momentum going taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries.
Conway remained steady till the end not out on 92 off 58 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes. Jimmy Neesham provided hitting abilities with a quickfire cameo smashing six off the final delivery helping New Zealand post 200 for 3.
