India A comprehensively beat West Indies A in the unofficial ODI series by a 4-1 margin. Young sensation Shubman Gill was once again among runs, amassing a total of 218 runs. Though, the three-figure mark eluded the Punjab-born cricketer, Gill hit three consecutive fifties to top the charts in the batting department.
He was adjudged man of the series and there were talks of him being part of the Indian team for the forthcoming tour of the Caribbean. Hence, it came as a shock to many when Chief selector MSK Prasad announced the squad for the West Indies tour on 21st July and Gill”s name was missing.
Gill snubbed for India”s tour of West Indies; Iyer, Pandey make the cut
The think-tank rewarded the performance of Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey- both making it to the ODI squad. Iyer has been in fine touch of late while Pandey”s show in the IPL, followed by the recently concluded tour of the island nation held him in a good state.
With India yet to find a stable batter for the No. 4 spot, Gill looked promising to fill up the jigsaw. In the IPL, playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, the 19-year-old notched up 296 runs in 13 games. He looked reliable at the crease and steadied the ship on numerous occasions.
Gill will have to wait in the wings
As it looks like, Gill will have to wait in the wings to find a spot in the XI. “He was given an opportunity when KL Rahul was out against New Zealand, he will have to wait for his turn,” Prasad was quoted as saying.
The likes of Vijay Shankar and Rishabh Pant failed to make a mark at the No. 4 spot and therefore the series against the Windies will be closely watched by the wise men as they look to build a core team in white-ball cricket.
