Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has opened up about the embarrassing loss, and how it let the Indian fans down. He expressed that no excuse will make one forget the loss, but also added stressed the need to move on from the loss.
India topped Group 2 in the Super 12 stage with eight points from five matches. However, in the semi-finals, they failed to carry on the momentum. The batters let down the team in the first innings, managing only 169 runs on the board. The bowlers too put up a dismal show, failing to pick up a single wicket, as England notched up a 10-wickets win.
Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin spoke about the semi-final in a video on his Youtube channel. He stated that the campaign cannot be termed ‘disappointing’ as the team performed well to reach the semi-finals. However, he expressed that he understands the disappointment of the fans. Ashwin said,
“Everyone would have felt bad seeing Team India not win the tournament or reach the final. I agree, it would have been shattering. I don’t think any excuse will make you forget it. Definitely, it is a disappointing moment. But we all have to move on.”
“We can’t call it a disappointing campaign. We lost in the semi-finals. Reaching the semi-finals and finals can be considered an achievement. But from an Indian fan’s point of view, and the expectations they have of this team, I totally understand the disappointment from the fans. But we players are at least 200-300 times more disappointed than what you all went through,” he added.
