Marnus Labuschagne became the 8th batter to hit a double century and century in a Test match. He achieved this feat on the 4th day of the 1st Test against visiting West Indies side at Optus Stadium, Perth on 3 December 2022.
The solid number 3 batter scored 204 runs in the first innings as Australia posted a massive total of 598 for 4 declared. He came to batting crease after an early wicket of Usman Khawaja on the late night of 3rd evening. Labuschagne was given a reprieve as Joseph overstepped. He then cashed on the chance of putting West Indies bowlers all over the park.
Labuschagne completed a half-century off 71 balls. He then upped the ante with aggressive shots putting enough pressure on the inexperienced West Indies bowling line-up completing his century off 109 balls. He remained not out on 104 off 110 balls with 13 fours and 2 sixes as Australia declared their innings on 182 for 2 in 37 overs.
Labuschagne provided an excellent display of cricket in both innings. He has been the backbone of the Australian batting line-up in Test matches. During 2022, the number 3 batter showed tremendous success with 733 runs from 8 Tests so far (14 innings) with 3 centuries and 1 half-century at an average of 56.38.
Labuschagne came as a concussion replacement for Steve Smith in the 2nd Ashes Test match played at Lords in 2019. Since then, he has become a solid number 3 batter for Australia with 2539 runs from 28 matches (48 innings) with 7 centuries and 13 half-centuries to his name. He has solid technique against pacers and spinners.
The Australian Cricket Team are in a commanding position on the 4th day of 1st Test match as they have set a mammoth total of 498 runs to win.
