Australia thrashed West Indies by 419 runs in the 2nd Test match played at Adelaide Oval on 11 December 2022. The Aussies looked unbeaten during day-night Test matches on Australian soil.
Australian stand-in captain Steve Smith won the toss and decided to bat first. David Warner and Usman Khawaja provided a flying start before Alazzari Joseph dismissed Warner. The Australian openers added 34 runs for the opening wicket in quick time.
Marnus Labuschagne continued his sublime touch keeping the pressure on lacklustre West Indies bowling. Khawaja and Labuschagne added 95 runs for the 2nd wicket. Steve Smith was dismissed without opening his account.
Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne looked in sensational touch as they kept Australia in a commanding position at 330 for 3. The second day saw both overnight batters scoring runs at a quick pace. Labuschagne eventually fell for 163 as he and Travis Head added 297 for the 4th wicket.
Australia kept losing wickets before Steve Smith declared their innings on 511 for 7. The Australian bowling looked sharp as Neser got the breakthrough dismissing West Indies captain Kraigg Braithwaite. Mitchell Starc, Neser, Nathan Lyon, and Cameron Green shared wickets between them to bowl out West Indies for 214 runs in their first innings.
David Warner and Usman Khawaja provided a decent start showing intent and keeping pressure on West Indies’ bowling. The Australian openers put on 77 runs for the first wicket. Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith and Travis Head hit quickfire knocks as they declared their innings on 199 for 6 setting West Indies 497 runs target.
Mitchell Starc, Michael Neser and Scott Boland took 3 wickets each while Nathan Lyon grabbed 1 wicket to bowl West Indies for 77. Australia whitewashed West Indies 2-0 and consolidated their top position in the ICC Test Championship cycle. With this win, Australia moved to 75 percent.
For his 175 and 38 not out, Travis Head was named the player of the match award. Marnus Labuschagne was named the player of the series award for his 502 runs from 4 innings.
