The inaugural edition of the U19 Women’s World Cup has now reached the Super 12 stage. The tournament, so far, has witnessed great performances and interesting play, which has attracted a large number of audience. During the group stage, match between Sri Lanka and Australia a bizarre run-out took place, which sparked debate.
The incident took place at the Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Wednesday, January 18. Australian batters Amy Smith and Lucy Hamilton were at the crease in the penultimate over of the innings. On the final delivery, Lucy Hamilton hit Rashmi Nethranjalee’s delivery towards long-off and went for a run. The ball went to Dulanga Dissanayake, who threw to the non-strikers end.
It was a great throw from Dissanayake, as the ball hit the stumps. Hamilton decided to go for a second run, but aborted her plan. As he tried to get back into the crease, the bowler, Rashmi Nethranjalee unintentionally blocked her way. Nethranjalee was waiting to collect the throw. But the ball hit the stumps directly, and Hamilton was given out by the umpires.
