Outgoing Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar had his say on the inclusion of Rohit Sharma primarily as an opener. He said that if successful, India can chase down huge targets in the longest format of the game.
“If he succeeds, his style of play will be extremely helpful to the team. It might result in being able to successfully chase down targets that we haven”t achieved in the past, like in Cape Town and Edgbaston“, said Bangar in an interview with ESPNCricinfo.
It is to be noted that the opening combination has been a problem for the side for some time now. KL Rahul has been struggling for a long time and this led to his snub. This led to the promotion of Rohit higher the order. Youngster Shubman Gill has been added as a back-up opener to the side.
The Indian side has been one of the most successful sides in Tests for some time now. It will be interesting if Rohit could create an early impact in his role and cement his spot in the side.
Rohit and Whites
However, Rohit wasn”t a part of the playing XI despite named in the squad in the West Indies Test series. A huge challenge awaits Rohit for a successful stint in red-ball cricket.
Additionally, he has always expressed a liking to being a part of the Indian Test side. Even a few of his social media posts back then depicted the same.
On the other hand, the home tour against the Proteas is all set to begin tomorrow. The series begins with the T20I”s and we are all set to witness an action-filled weekend.
