The teen sensation Shafali Verma produced brilliant innings for Delhi Capitals against Gujarat Giants in a one-sided contest played in the WPL 2023 at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on 11 March 2023.
Chasing down 106 runs to win, Verma showed intent right from the word go putting pressure on Gujarat Giants bowlers. Verma demolished Gujarat Giants’ bowlers smashing 14 runs in the 2nd over, 16 runs in the 3rd over, 23 runs in the 4th over, and 15 runs in the 5th over. At the end of six overs, Delhi Capitals raced away to 87 for 0.
Verma completed a half-century off just 19 deliveries and made life tough for Gujarat Giants bowlers. After reaching her milestone she continued to display attacking shots with a cracking knock remaining unbeaten on 76 off 28 deliveries with 10 fours and 5 sixes. On other hand, Meg Lanning enjoyed Verma’s batting. Delhi Capitals won the match by 10 wickets with 77 deliveries to spare.
Brilliant bowling by Marizanne Kapp
It was a superb piece of bowling by Marizanne Kapp. After being asked to field first, Delhi Capitals got off to a perfect start as Kapp dismissed Sabbehini Meghana with a peach. She then dismissed South African bat Laura Wolvaardt with another peach to leave Gujarat Giants in trouble.
Kapp then grabbed the big wicket of Ash Gardner the very next ball with a review by Gujarat Giants. She looked threatening to dismiss Hemalatha with a review by Delhi Capitals for LBW. The umpire called not out but on review, it was overturned to out leaving Gujarat Giants in tatters.
Kapp broke the backbone of Gujarat Giants’ batting getting the wicket of Harleen Deol with a review for LBW. The umpire called not out but Delhi Capitals reviewed it and was overturned to out. She finished with figures of 5 for 15 in 4 overs while Shikha Pandey took 3 for 26 in 4 overs.
For her figures of 5 for 15 in 4 overs, Kapp was awarded the player of the match award. With this win, Delhi Capitals returned to winning ways after a big loss to Mumbai Indians.
