Lucknow Super Giants batter Kyle Mayers made his Indian Premier League (IPL) memorable with a swashbuckling knock against the Delhi Capitals on Saturday, April 1 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. He became the first West Indies cricketer to slam a fifty on his IPL debut.

Kyle Mayers opened the innings along with skipper KL Rahul. While Rahul struggled to get going on the surface, Kayle Mayers smashed the bowlers all around the park. He slammed a couple of sixes against Mukesh Kumar in the seventh over and followed it up with a four and a six against Axar Patel in the next over.

In the ninth over, Kyle Mayers hit Kuldeep Yadav for a six over the deep backward square to bring up his fifty. He got down on one knew and played a slog-sweep. The West Indies cricketer got to his fifty off just 28 deliveries. Earlier, he was dropped by Khaleel Ahmed off Chetan Sakariya on 14 runs.

Kyle Mayers was dismissed by Axar Patel in the twelfth over of the innings. He looked to cut an outside off-stump length delivery, which came in sharply to rattle the wickets. The Lucknow Super Kings opener managed 73 runs off 38 deliveries, with two boundaries and seven sixes. His outstanding knock left the fans and experts amazed.

Let’s take a look at how the fans reacted to Kyle Mayers’ destructive batting performance:

It was a tricky surface at the start: Kyle Mayers

After his fantastic knock against the Delhi Capitals, Kyle Mayers opened up on the nature of the wicket at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. He expressed that it was a tricky surface, with the ball keeping low. Kyle Mayers said at the mid-innings break,

“It was a tricky surface at the start. Kept a bit low, and was skidding a bit. Bounce was variable. It’s a new surface. Tried getting some info from the guys but no one has played on it.”

The Lucknow Super Giants put on 194 runs in the first innings. Apart from Kyle Mayers, Nicholas Pooran too played a fine hand of 36 runs. Meanwhile, Ayush Badoni’s cameo of 18 runs and Impact player, Krishnappa Gowtham’s six off the last delivery took the team past the 190 runs mark.
