3 Key CSK Players Who Face The Possibility Of Being Released Before IPL 2024

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured their fifth IPL title earlier this year, matching a record, but they are well aware of the potential to further improve their performance.

Ahead of the 2024 edition, all 10 franchises have begun their preparations, and recent headlines have been focused on coaching staff changes in various teams.

The player transfers are also expected to take place soon, with the auction likely to be scheduled around the turn of the year.

During IPL 2023, CSK’s home performances were not as dominant as usual. Key players faced fitness issues and a dip in form, requiring a combined team effort to secure a top-two finish and reach the final.

Ahead of the IPL 2024 auction, these are three crucial CSK players who are under the threat of being released:

#3 Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar was a vital contributor to CSK’s victory in IPL 2023, even though he suffered an injury in the initial phase of the season, causing him to miss nearly a month of action. Nevertheless, upon his return, he displayed exceptional form in taking wickets.

Chahar excelled after returning, getting two or more wickets in five matches out of seven, including three-wicket hauls against KKR and DC, and another three-wicket performance in the playoffs.

Despite his strong performances, it was evident that Chahar was far from being fully fit. His pace noticeably dropped, and he struggled to maintain momentum while bowling, appearing to conserve energy to complete his allotted overs.

Chahar’s frequent injuries have raised concerns about his ability to play consistently. His high price tag of ₹14 crore is primarily due to his batting prowess, which CSK did not require during IPL 2023.

Although it is highly improbable, they might contemplate the option of releasing the injury-prone swing bowler and acquiring him at a more affordable price.

#2 Mitchell Santner

Mitchell Santner, as usual, had limited opportunities to play for CSK in IPL 2023.

Despite picking up three wickets in as many matches with an impressive economy rate of 6.75, he played a significant role in the early part of the season when Maheesh Theekshana was away on international duty.

However, after Theekshana’s return, Santner found himself on the bench despite calls for his inclusion. Throughout his IPL career, Santner has not featured in more than six games for CSK.

Considering the progress of Nishant Sindhu, who has shown promising performances in both batting and bowling across all levels, CSK may consider grooming him as a backup for Ravindra Jadeja.

#1 Ben Stokes

Without a doubt, the most likely player to be released ahead of the IPL 2024 auction is Ben Stokes. Numerous concerns have arisen regarding his commitment to franchise cricket, fitness, and T20 capabilities.

Despite being acquired for a substantial amount at the 2023 auction, Stokes played merely two matches for CSK. Following a knee injury, he was unable to make it back into the playing XI.

Once he recovered, CSK had already found a more effective combination, rendering Stokes unnecessary, and he left the franchise before the playoffs due to his international commitments.

Given his hefty price tag of ₹16.25 crore, Stokes is at a significant risk of being released ahead of the next IPL season.
