Former West Indies cricket player Marlon Samuels has been deemed to have violated four counts within the ICC’s Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) Anti Corruption Code. These allegations are linked to his involvement in the 2019 Abu Dhabi T10 League.
In September 2021, Samuels was formally accused of these charges, and subsequent to the proceedings held by the Anti-Corruption Tribunal, he was determined to be culpable. The following are the four charges for which he has been found in breach of the ICC’s Anti Corruption Code:
Article 2.4.2 (by a majority decision) – Failing to disclose to the Designated Anti-Corruption Official, the receipt of any gift, payment, hospitality or other benefit that was made or given in circumstances that could bring the Participant or the sport of cricket into disrepute.
Article 2.4.3 (unanimous decision)- Failing to disclose to the Designated Anti-Corruption Official receipt of hospitality with a value of US $750 or more.
Article 2.4.6 (unanimous decision) – Failing to cooperate with the Designated Anti-Corruption Official’s investigation.
Article 2.4.7 (unanimous decision) – Obstructing or delaying the Designated Anti-Corruption Official’s investigation by concealing information that may have been relevant to the investigation.
Marlon Samuels played a key role for West Indies
Marlon Samuels, a dual-time champion of the T20 World Cup, will retain his position as a key factor in West Indies’ achievement of securing two T20 World Cups, despite the charges potentially marring his cricketing reputation. The former cricketer emerged as a pivotal figure, earning the Player of the Match accolade in both finals and establishing himself as the go-to player during critical situations.
During the 2012 final, marked by a somewhat disappointing batting display from the West Indies team, Samuels stood out by contributing a resilient 78 runs, enabling his team to establish a competitive total on the scoreboard.
This performance ultimately led to a 36-run victory for the Caribbean team. While Carlos Brathwaite is often remembered for his four consecutive sixes that secured the 2016 final, it was Marlon Samuels who once again anchored the innings with an unbeaten score of 85.
These remarkable innings highlighted Samuels’ composure under pressure and his ability to perform exceptionally in high-stakes matches.
