Asia Cup 2023: Shreyas Iyer Yet To Recover Fully, Misses Sri Lanka Match
Shreyas Iyer ruled out of the ODI Series against NZ, replacment named

Team India batter Shreyas Iyer is yet to fully recover from back spasms, confirmed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He was unavailable for selection for the crucial Super Four Match against hosts Sri Lanka in the 2023 Asia Cup on Tuesday, September 12 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Shreyas Iyer experienced a back spasm during the warm-up before India’s match against Pakistan on Sunday, September 10. He had to be rested for the game. Wicket-keeper batter KL Rahul was brought in as a last-minute change by the Indian team. Shreyas Iyer is yet to recover fully and has been advised to rest by the BCCI Medical Team. He was not available for selection for the Sri Lanka match.

Before the game, BCCI took to Twitter to share an update on Shreyas Iyer’s fitness. They wrote, “UPDATE – Shreyas Iyer is feeling better but is yet to fully recover from a back spasm. He has been advised rest by the BCCI Medical Team and has not travelled with the team to the stadium today for India’s Super 4 match against Sri Lanka.”

Shreyas Iyer has had persistent back troubles and underwent surgery earlier this year to cure it. He missed the Indian Premier League 2023 season as well as the World Test Championship final against Australia. He was out of action for several months, before returning to the squad for the ongoing Asia Cup. However, the back trouble seems to have resurfaced.

KL Rahul replaced Shreyas Iyer in the playing XI before the toss against Pakistan

Wicket-keeper batter KL Rahul was brought in place of Shreyas Iyer in India’s playing XI against Pakistan at the last minute. Iyer suffered back spasms during warm-up and had to be left out. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma revealed that KL Rahul was informed about the change only a few minutes before the toss.

“And then KL, to return from injury and then find out 5 minutes before the toss that he’s playing, and to perform the way he did, it shows the mindset of the player,” said Rohit Sharma.

The wicket-keeper batter grabbed the opportunity with both hands, slamming a century on his comeback. Team India defeated Pakistan by 228 runs on Monday, September 11 in Colombo. KL Rahul has retained his place in the XI for the Sri Lanka game after his outstanding performance.
