The star all-rounder completed his 10 overs before the 40th over and then left the field for scans, passing the captaincy responsibilities to Najmul Hossain Shanto.
Subsequently, Bangladesh suffered their second consecutive loss as New Zealand successfully chased down 246 runs in 42.5 overs, securing the top position on the table. Shakib had muscle cramps because of the hot weather in Chennai. This happened after Kane Williamson, who was returning to the team, decided that New Zealand would bowl first.
Shakib got the injury while running to score a single run in the first half of the game. Najmul Shanto, who was leading the team in Shakib’s absence, talked about this after the match. He stepped in to bat when Bangladesh was in a tough situation, having only scored 56 runs with the loss of four wickets in the 12th over. He, along with Mushfiqur Rahim, the only two players in the entire tournament participating in their fifth campaign, helped restore Bangladesh’s innings.
Shakib managed to score 40 runs from 51 deliveries before being dismissed by a clever bouncer from Lockie Ferguson in the 30th over. When it came to bowling, he took one wicket, that of Devon Conway, giving away 54 runs.
Kane Williamson got injured upon his comeback in the ODI World Cup
Following his absence from New Zealand’s early matches in the ongoing 2023 ODI World Cup, Kane Williamson made a comeback to the playing XI, taking over the leadership from Will Young. The captain displayed his skill during a challenging run chase, accumulating 78 runs from 107 deliveries before being taken out of the game as a precaution.
He suffered a thumb injury when a wayward throw struck him as he was trying to make a single run. The medical team promptly examined him and applied a substantial bandage to the injured area. In the post-match presentation, Williamson stated that he would have scans on Saturday. Currently, there are no additional details available, and the severity of the injury will only be known after the scan results are revealed.
