Salman Butt believes that Pakistan’s pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi performs exceptionally well with the new ball but still has room for improvement in his bowling during the later phases of the innings.
Butt expressed his view that Shaheen Afridi’s performance in the second and third spells of his bowling isn’t as impactful as his performance when he bowls with the new ball.
In his recent YouTube video, the former Pakistan opener made this observation:
“He is one of the best bowlers in the world with the new ball, especially in the first three or four overs. But when you see his second and third spells, I think he needs to learn a lot.”
”He is not the same bowler and becomes a normal bowler once the ball gets older. He has the potential and is mentally very strong. So, there is every chance of him becoming a very, very good and complete bowler.”
Shaheen Afridi hasn’t had a substantial impact with the ball in the 2023 World Cup. The left-arm seamer has only taken four wickets in three matches. Notably, he didn’t take any wickets in Pakistan’s first match against the Netherlands.

Mohammad Rizwan faced strong criticism for praying on the field during Pakistan’s 2023 World Cup match against the Netherlands in Hyderabad.
Vineet Jindal, a Supreme Court lawyer, filed a complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC), alleging that Rizwan’s actions went against the sportsmanship spirit.
In contrast, Salman Butt suggested that people shouldn’t take issue with the wicketkeeper-batsman’s act of worship. He commented (27:00):
“If any individual is standing somewhere and praying to his God, or whatever his relation is with his creator, it is up to him. Nobody should discuss this or have a problem with someone worshipping. That’s the world that we need to live in.”
Pakistan is scheduled to play their next match on Friday, October 20, against Australia at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
