ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Wankhede Stadium Unveils Renovated ‘MS Dhoni Seats’ Ahead Of Match At Wankhede Stadium

The two seats at Wankhede Stadium, where MS Dhoni hit the famous World Cup-winning six in 2011, have been renovated and are now part of a specially designed cabin called the “World Cup 2011 Victory Memorial Stand.” Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is preparing to host its first 2023 ODI World Cup match when defending champions England take on Australia on October 21 in a day-night game starting at 2:00 PM IST.

One day before the match, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) posted a picture on its official social media account, showing the renovated seats where Dhoni hit the 2011 World Cup-winning six.

The picture was posted along with the following caption:

“The two seats where MS Dhoni’s 2011 ODI World Cup winning six landed at the Wankhede Stadium will forever be symbolic to every cricket fan ✨🏆 #MCA #MumbaiCricket #IndianCricket #Wankhede #BCCI.”

In the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Dhoni took the lead. He was named the Player of the Match for his outstanding unbeaten 91 from 79 deliveries as India successfully chased down a target of 275 runs to claim their second ODI World Cup.

Although India had a challenging start with Lasith Malinga dismissing Virender Sehwag for zero and Sachin Tendulkar for 18, Gautam Gambhir (97 off 122) and a young Virat Kohli (35 off 49) formed a partnership of 83 runs for the third wicket, which significantly contributed to India’s victory.

Following Kohli’s dismissal, where he was caught and bowled by Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dhoni partnered with Gambhir, and the two played a pivotal role with a partnership of 109 runs. Dhoni, in a memorable moment, secured the victory by hitting a six in the penultimate over, sending Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Kulasekara’s delivery over the boundary.
