In the recent victory against New Zealand in Match 32 of the ongoing ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023, Quinton de Kock continued his excellent form by scoring another century. Although he began his innings cautiously, with just seven runs from his initial 18 balls, he gradually accelerated and maintained a steady run rate.
Partnering with Rassie van der Dussen, De Kock troubled the New Zealand bowlers and occasionally hit the ball in the air. Even though it was hot during the afternoon, he continued to play well and created a significant 200-run partnership with Van der Dussen for the second wicket.
De Kock reached his century in the 36th over in an impressive manner, hitting the ball over the long-leg boundary for a six. De Kock scored a hundred, hitting many boundaries and sixes. He added more runs but got out after a while.
Van der Dussen also batted well, and South Africa scored a lot of runs. Their bowlers did a great job, and they won by a big margin. Here are three special things De Kock did during his century:
#3 The third player to achieve four or more centuries in a single ODI World Cup campaign
In his final ODI World Cup, Quinton de Kock has been incredibly impactful. He’s been a standout performer, notching up four centuries in the tournament. De Kock began with a century against Sri Lanka, followed by a 109 against Australia.
He then recorded the highest individual score of the tournament with 174 against Bangladesh, and most recently, he scored 114 against New Zealand.
The 30-year-old de Kock has now joined a select group as only the third player to achieve the feat of scoring four or more centuries in a single ODI World Cup.
Kumar Sangakkara was the first to do it in the 2015 edition, followed by Rohit Sharma’s incredible 2019 campaign, during which he notched five centuries for India.
#2 The highest number of runs scored by a South African player in a single ODI World Cup edition
Quinton de Kock has been playing really well, scoring 545 runs in seven matches with an average of almost 78 and a strike rate of over 112. He’s doing great in this tournament.
Quinton de Kock has broken the record for the most runs by a South African player in a single ODI World Cup campaign, surpassing Jacques Kallis’ previous record of 485 runs from the 2007 edition. De Kock now holds the new record with 545 runs in this tournament.
#1 De Kock set a new record for the most runs by a wicket-keeper in a single ODI World Cup
Quinton de Kock’s 575 runs in the 2023 edition of the tournament have made him the highest-scoring wicketkeeper in a single edition. Before De Kock, the record was held by Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, who scored 541 runs at the 2015 ODI World Cup.
Additionally, De Kock has hit more sixes in ODI World Cup history than any other wicketkeeper, with 22 maximums. With three sixes in the recent match, he surpassed Adam Gilchrist’s 19 sixes in the tournament.
