ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: [WATCH]- Sri Lanka And Bangladesh Players Decline To Exchange Handshakes After The Controversial Clash

In a surprising twist, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh players didn’t shake hands after a heated 2023 World Cup match. This happened after they played their league stage game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday, November 6.

During the match, there were a lot of arguments between the players, and things got even more intense when Angelo Mathews got out in a special way. After that, Mathews made a gesture like looking at a wristwatch when he dismissed Shakib.

In the final result, Bangladesh secured a wet three-wicket victory, keeping their hopes alive for automatic qualification in the 2025 Champions Trophy. In a video posted on social media, the players from both teams are observed walking in separate directions once the game concluded.

Kusal Mendis and Shakib Al Hasan have opposing responses to Angelo Mathews’ dismissal in the World Cup match

Sri Lanka’s captain, Kusal Mendis, voiced his dissatisfaction with the manner in which Angelo Mathews was dismissed during the World Cup game against Bangladesh. He believed that there were only a few seconds remaining, and the umpires didn’t make the right call. In his remarks after the match, he stated:

“It’s very disappointing – when Angelo came to the crease, there were 5 seconds left. Then he found out strap of the helmet came off. It’s disappointing umpires couldn’t step in and make correct decision.”

On the other side, Bangladesh’s captain Shakib Al Hasan defended his decision to appeal against Mathews, saying it was allowed by the rules, and he had no problem making a decision that helped his team. He said:

“One of our fielders came to me and said if you appeal now he’ll be out. Then I appealed and the umpires asked me if I’m serious or whether I am going to take it back. It’s in the laws. I don’t know if it’s right or wrong.”

He continued:

“I was at war and I had to take a decision to make sure my team wins. Right or wrong, there will be debates but if it is in the rules I don’t mind taking those chances. That (altercation with Mathews) helped, bit more fight, I’m 36 and normally fight doesn’t come easily but happy it did today.”

The Sri Lankan team will have their final World Cup league match against New Zealand in Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on November 9. In the meantime, Bangladesh will take on Australia in Pune at the Maharashtra Cricket Association on November 11.
