Mayank Agarwal, the captain of the Karnataka cricket team, has been granted fitness clearance, marking his return to the sport. This comeback is slated for the ongoing 2023-24 Ranji Trophy, following his absence from the fifth round due to a health emergency.
The incident leading to Agarwal’s setback occurred after Karnataka’s victorious match against Tripura when he ingested a liquid while on a flight from Agartala. Subsequently, he experienced vomiting, prompting his removal from the plane and admission to a hospital in Agartala. Once discharged, the 32-year-old made his way back to Bengaluru, where he underwent a thorough medical examination.
The medical team overseeing Agarwal’s recovery has granted him clearance, advising a brief hiatus before resuming gameplay. On February 5, he rejoined the squad and is set to lead Karnataka in the southern derby against Tamil Nadu at Chepauk, commencing on February 9. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Agarwal assured that he is “fit and fine with no major issues.”
During Agarwal’s absence, Nikin Jose assumed the captaincy role and significantly contributed, scoring 107 runs in the encounter against Goa, which concluded in a draw. Karnataka faced a formidable challenge against Railways in Surat, with a first-innings score of 174. They ultimately chased down 226 with one wicket remaining, thanks to an unbeaten 67 from Manish Pandey.
Agarwal’s individual performance in the tournament thus far stands at 310 runs in seven innings, boasting an average of 44.28, inclusive of a century and two half-centuries. In the current standings, Karnataka occupies the second position in Group C, securing two wins and recording a loss and a draw in four matches.
The Karnataka squad for upcoming fixtures includes Mayank Agarwal as captain, along with notable players such as Devdutt Padikkal, R Samarth, Nikin Jose, Manish Pandey, and others. As they gear up for the challenges ahead, Agarwal’s return adds depth and experience to the team.
