In the Ranji Trophy 2024 final between Mumbai and Vidharbha, Mumbai’s emerging batting talent, Musheer Khan, displayed impressive skill. The presence of cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar at Wankhede Stadium served as inspiration for the young Mumbai batsman.
At just 19 years old, Musheer exhibited maturity with a composed innings of 136, guiding Mumbai to a dominant position against Vidarbha. Reflecting on his performance, Musheer disclosed that initially, he was unaware of Sachin Tendulkar’s presence in the stadium and his observation of his innings.
It wasn’t until after reaching his half-century that he noticed Tendulkar enjoying his innings on the giant screen, realizing the significance of his performance in the presence of the cricketing legend.
“I did not even know that Sachin sir was here, But when I was batting on 60, I saw him on the big screen and (thereon) I batted with the motivation that he is watching today and I have to impress sir,” Musheer was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo.
“I gained valuable insights during the partnerships”- Musheer Khan
Musheer Khan has been an integral part of Mumbai’s Ranji campaign this season, notably scoring a double century against Baroda in the quarterfinals and a crucial fifty against Tamil Nadu in the semifinals. However, his latest innings in the final elevated his performances to new heights.
Musheer also acknowledged the guidance from senior players like Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer, which relieved some pressure off him. Additionally, he praised Rahane for offering support and encouragement throughout the innings.
Furthermore, he disclosed that his strategy was to bat deep into the game and spend extended periods at the crease. Regarding his naturally aggressive approach of advancing down the pitch to bowlers, Musheer clarified that it was a calculated risk honed through consistent practice.
The young batsman also expressed gratitude towards his brother Sarfaraz Khan for his unwavering support, especially after a setback in the first innings.
“I got to learn a lot during the partnerships, It is a matter of pride for me that I got to bat with two Test players, it becomes easier for me too. Everyone on their team was trying to get Ajju dada (Ajinkya Rahane) out and it became easier for me.”
“Me and Iyer had a good partnership, we communicated well and (Iyer) bhai was insisting that we have to bat for a long period and take the game as far as we can,” he added.
“Risk is there in everything. There is risk in defending too – what if there is a bat-pad situation to get out? But I have a lot of confidence with it; I have done a lot of preparation and practice by moving in the front.”
“I had spoken with bhai earlier and he told me that this is a good opportunity for me in the final, with everyone watching. If I would make runs here, it would be better for me in the future,” Musheer concluded.
At present, Vidarbha faces a formidable challenge, requiring over 528 runs to secure victory and claim the Ranji title. Mumbai, a highly accomplished team in the tournament, aims to add another trophy to their collection.
