DC’s head coach, Ricky Ponting, talked about the chance of using Prithvi Shaw as their opener in the upcoming match against CSK at the Vizag stadium on March 31, Sunday. Shaw hasn’t played for Delhi yet as the team chose David Warner and Mitchell Marsh as the opening pair in the first two games of the season.
Addressing the media before DC’s game against CSK, Ponting expressed his backing for Shaw, emphasizing the hard work he’s been putting in. He also mentioned that the team’s setup didn’t allow for Shaw to play in the initial two matches.
“Yeah, he’s (Shaw) definitely pushing for it. He has worked hard in the last couple of weeks. Obviously, our team make-up in the first game without obviously (Anrich) Nortje being in allowed us to play four overseas batsmen,” Ponting said.
“So by doing that, we pushed Mitchell Marsh to the top of the order, which pushed Prithvi out of the side.”
Will Prithvi Shaw feature in the match for DC against CSK?
Ponting stated that Shaw’s inclusion in the team would depend on how he performs in the pre-match training session.
“So, yeah, we’ll have a really good look at Prithvi at training and see how well he plays in the nets. And if he impresses everybody today, we’ll definitely consider him for selection.”
The head coach appeared quite confident that DC would secure their first victory of the season.
“We feel that a really good game is just around the corner for us. In fact, I am sure we will have a more positive intent going into this game,” Ponting added.
DC, along with MI, are the only two franchises yet to secure a win in IPL 2024. Delhi’s decision to retain Ricky Bhui in the top order hasn’t yielded any results yet, as he has only scored 3 runs in 2 matches. Shaw will be keen to play and showcase his abilities as a top-order batsman for DC.
Delhi will aim to capitalize on their home advantage and add points to their tally as they take on CSK.
