IPL 2024: “If You Are Chasing Over 200, You Need To Play At A 200-strike Rate” – Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill, the star India cricketer, observed the high intensity of T20 matches in the current era. Despite fierce competition, he thrives as captain of the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. Gill opined on the significance of strike rate and tactical strategies, recognizing their crucial role in different cricket formats. He stressed the importance of adaptability in navigating the dynamic nature of the sport.

“As a batter, in any given situation, if you need to play slower, then you have to get the job done for the team. But if you are chasing over 200, you need to play at a 200-strike rate, you should have the game to be able to play that way,” he said in an interview with The Times of India.

“In Test cricket, people have started playing a bit faster because they think that is the best way to get the results. Now you don’t see that many draws with the WTC coming in. You wouldn’t see too many flat wickets. There’s always something for bowlers wherever you go because the teams want results,” he added.

At just 24 years old, he was given the captaincy duty of the highly successful IPL team, Gujarat Titans.

With the future of India’s batting relying on him, he’s embracing the challenge of continuously improving his performance in all types of cricket matches. Taking over as captain of Gujarat Titans adds a new level of responsibility to his plate. Hardik Pandya, who led the team in the initial two years, returned to his former team, Mumbai Indians.

Despite having experienced players like Rashid Khan and Kane Williamson available, the Gujarat Titans made a bold decision before the 2024 season to appoint Shubman as their captain, following their title win in 2022.

“It’s very interesting captaining a franchisee who has been there for two years and played two finals. I have to see what more I can do than what I was doing as a player. It’s the same great bunch of players,” he added.

The captain of the Titans also offered his thoughts on the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, which is set to begin soon after the conclusion of the lucrative league. Shubman Gill found transitioning to Test cricket is very demanding. Under his leadership in the IPL 2024, the Gujarat-based team currently placed at the seventh spot on the points table, securing victories in four out of their nine matches.

They are preparing for their 10th match of the season against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, scheduled for April 28th. The captain of the Titans also provided his perspectives on the T20 World Cup 2024, which is scheduled to begin shortly after the conclusion of the lucrative league.

“It’s challenging, especially right now. It’s very challenging when you switch to Test cricket because the intensity at which T20 is played right now is completely different from maybe four years or eight years back. The mindset of the players also has changed quite a bit. It’s not a challenge, based on skills. It’s more of a mental challenge. But that’s also the best part about it,” the Punjab-born concluded.
