Veteran fast bowler James Anderson has made a big decision that’s causing a stir in English cricket. He’s hanging up his international cricket boots after the upcoming Test match against the West Indies at Lord’s, which kicks off on July 10. Anderson’s recent performances haven’t been up to his usual standard.
During the Ashes series in England last summer, he only managed to grab five wickets in four matches. His form didn’t improve much during the recent series against India either. He chose Instagram to break the news to his fans. In a heartfelt message, he thanked everyone who has supported him throughout his career.
Anderson is a cricket icon, having played a staggering 400 matches for England. In those games, he took an impressive 987 wickets, making him one of the best bowlers ever. Even though he hasn’t played a One Day International (ODI) for England since 2015, he’s still at the top of the list for most wickets taken by an English player, with 269 to his name.

“It’s been an incredible 20 years representing my country, playing the game I’ve loved since I was a kid. I’m going to miss walking out for England so much. But I know the time is right to step aside and let others realise their dreams just like I got to, because there is no greater feeling,” Anderson captioned his post on Instagram.
“I couldn’t have done it without the love and support of Daniella, Lola, Ruby and my parents. A huge thank you to them. Also, thank you to the players and coaches who have made this the best job in the world. I’m excited for the new challenges that lie ahead, as well as filling my days with even more golf,” he added.
According to various sources, England’s Test head coach Brendon McCullum flew in from New Zealand to meet with Anderson. They discussed England’s plans to shake up their squad and give younger players a chance. Reportedly, England is gearing up for the Ashes series in Australia in 2025/26, and Anderson isn’t likely to be part of the team for that series.
