Veteran New Zealand bowler Tim Southee received an official warning from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a Level 1 offence under the Code of Conduct. The incident occurred during the Group C match against the West Indies in the 2024 T20 World Cup in Trinidad on Wednesday, June 12.
The ICC stated that Southee violated Article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”
“New Zealand player Tim Southee has been handed an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Group C match against the West Indies at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad on Wednesday,” ICC’s statement read.
Reportedly, he struck a hand sanitizer dispenser on his way to the dressing room after being dismissed during the run chase. The veteran came in to bat in the 18th over after Glenn Phillips’ departure and was dismissed for a first-ball duck by Alzarri Joseph.
This dismissal further edged the Blackcaps toward defeat as they failed to chase the 150-run target set by the co-hosts. Following their loss to the West Indies and Afghanistan’s recent victory over Papua New Guinea, the Kane Williamson-led team has been eliminated from the competition.
While Southee has accepted the sanction imposed by match referee David Boon, closing the matter, he will receive one demerit point on his disciplinary record.

Tim Southee was not included in New Zealand’s playing XI for their humiliating defeat against Afghanistan in their opening match of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The right-arm seamer replaced Matt Henry in the team, while Rachin Ravindra and James Neesham came in for Mark Chapman and Michael Bracewell, respectively.
Southee delivered an excellent spell with the new ball, finishing with figures of 2-21 from his four overs. He took the crucial wickets of Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell, significantly contributing to reducing the co-hosts to 30-5 at one point.
Southee has not been banned for his offence and remains eligible for selection in New Zealand’s remaining group-stage matches against Papua New Guinea and Uganda.
