New Zealand Cricketer George Worker Announces His Retirement From Professional Cricket

George Worker, aged 34, a player of cricket hailing from New Zealand has announced that after playing cricket professionally for 17 years he is retiring. The decision to leave cricket was taken by him as a fresh opportunity in the business world came knocking on his door. He began his career with Central Districts and finished it with Auckland.

In season 2007-08 Worker started his cricketing career at Central Districts; soon he distinguished himself as a skilled left-handed batsman and an occasional left-arm spinner. In New Zealand’s domestic cricket, over time he had become consistent and had numerous records.

Notably enough in List A games played under him he made 6721 runs averaging 43.64 which included 18 hundreds along with 37 half centuries; likewise he could score 6400 runs during the first-class matches but there were challenges posed by this longer format since his average was only 29.49. On the other hand, in Twenty20s, Worker managed to accumulate 3480 runs with a strike rate averaging at 123.57.

Between 2015 and 2018, cricket player George Worker of New Zealand played in two Twenty20 Internationals and ten One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for his country. Worker had several noteworthy moments despite playing in few games.

In 2015, during his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in Harare, he struck an impressive 62 off 38 balls, earning him Player of the Match honours. The same tour marked his ODI debut; he would go on to knock three half-centuries in the format.

A career high of 659 runs at an average of over 82 in 10 innings during the 2017 Ford Trophy was one of his best performances at home. He was recalled to the national squad in 2022 to replace Mark Chapman during a home series after this performance put him back on the selectors’ radar. He was unable, though, to increase his number of international caps.

Worker, a cricket player, is moving from the game to the corporate world at Forsyth Barr, an investment services company. Auckland Cricket is still in favor of his new endeavor despite their setback.
