Morne Morkel, a former South African pacer, has been named the new bowling coach of the Indian cricket team by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Ahead of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, Morkel reported to the squad camp in Chennai, beginning a long 10-Test marathon.

The schedule consists of a five-match away tour against Australia, two Test matches against Bangladesh, three against New Zealand, and so on. Morkel was observed coaching inexperienced pacers in the camp, notably Akash Deep, as the team got ready for this difficult stretch.

The Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, is preparing for the rigours of this demanding Test schedule. India’s rising fast bowlers will benefit greatly from Morkel’s knowledge and experience in formulating the team’s bowling strategy. It is anticipated that his presence will increase the team’s chances of winning the forthcoming Test series.

Morkel talks out about being selected as India coach:

Following the first practice session, Morne Morkel, a former South African pacer, noted that the Indian team is fortunate to have numerous great senior players in its ranks and that the setup functions independently. He recognizes that the Indian team has huge expectations, but the former South African international is eager to share his knowledge and protect the existing setup.

“I sat for five minutes in the room reflecting on it. I first spoke to my dad, didn’t go to my wife. Normally they say go to your wife, but I went to speak to dad. Been a cricket fan for years and knowing what’s going to come is quite a special moment. I enjoyed it for about five to seven minutes by myself and then shared with my family about the opportunity,” Morne Morkel said.

“There will be expectations of winning and luckily I have experienced that in my playing days. I can share that knowledge. When I was setting the plan, I reflected upon that we are so lucky to have quality senior players. The senior players lead the charge. It’s our responsibility to support them. Just give them the right sort of advice we can give. It’s a set-up that sort of operates by itself. So to protect that and better that is the goal,” said Morne Morkel in a video released by BCCI.

India’s 1st Test squad vs Bangladesh: Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), R Ashwin, R Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Yash Dayal
