“Cricket To Behtar Honi Chahiye Na” – Rishabh Pant On Helping Bangladesh In Field Placement On Day 3 Of The First Test In 2024

Rishabh Pant, while talking about the viral moment on Day 3 of the first Test against Bangladesh at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, recalled words of wisdom from Ajay Jadeja, who was a former captain of India. He said that Ajay always talks about enhancing the game irrespective of who it is.

When asked if the bowler could move one fielder from mid-off to mid-wicket, Pant explained that this was due to the fact Bangladesh had put two fielders at almost the same place. The occurrence took place during Taskin Ahmed’s bowling during India’s second innings, and happened in the 35th over.

In a video doing the rounds on X, Rishabh Pant stated(via Jio Cinema):

“Firstly, Ajay bhai se yahi baat hoti rehti hai ki jese of the field bhi baat hoti hay to bolte hain yaar cricket to behtar honi chahiye na, kabhi par bhi khelo, chahe dusri team khele ya khud khelo. To waha pe fielder nahi tha, wo do fielder ek hi jagah khade they to maine ussko bola yaar ek fielder idhar laga lo.”

Translated version:

“Firstly, I keep having discussions with Ajay Jadeja and we keep talking about improving the game (cricket) whether it’s us or the opposition regardless of the venue. There was no fielder (at mid-wicket) and two fielders were near the same position (at mid-off), so I told the bowler (Taskin Ahmed) to place a fielder at mid-wicket.”

Ajay Jadeja mentored the Afghanistan team recently at the 2023 ODI World Cup where he almost saw them through to the semi-finals. The Asian side made history by defeating the reigning champions England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the 50-over ICC competition. With four victories across nine games in a round-robin format, they placed sixth overall.

“It was emotional” –Rishabh Pant reflected on scoring a century in his comeback Test match against Bangladesh

This year has marked Rishabh Pant’s return to competitive cricket after a long break from it due to injury. After scoring his sixth Test century, he paid tribute to this comeback phase and expressed gratitude on congratulatory messages he received from fans.

As part of his second innings, he couldn’t help but rack up an impressive 109 runs that helped him bounce back into Test after being off for some time post-December 2022 car crash accident. He said (via Cricbuzz):

“Definition a lot special, firstly I love playing in Chennai and secondly after injury, I was looking to play all three formats, this was my first match in this format and hopefully I did better.”

”Definitely, it was emotional, I was looking to score runs in each and every game. Coming back to Test cricket where I belong the most, being on the field gives me pleasure more than anything else.”

“I don’t know what people say outside, I tried to read the situation in my own way, when you are 30-3 you need to stitch a partnership and that’s what I did with Gill. To do it with a guy who I have a great relationship with is special.”

In the second innings, Rishabh Pant made a remarkable 167-run partnership with fellow centurion Shubman Gill leading to a target of 515 runs for Bangladesh which India set them. The home team won by 280 runs and went up 1-0 in the Test match series.
