At the same time, young star Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lankan bowler Prabath Jayasuriya have also moved up in the rankings. Meanwhile, veterans like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have seen their rankings drop after the latest Test series.
Afghanistan’s white-ball specialists, particularly Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Rashid Khan, made waves in the ODI rankings, while Australia’s Travis Head continues his steady rise.
Pant returns in Test
After the accident, Pant had to undergo extensive rehabilitation. His return to full fitness was eagerly awaited by Indian fans and the cricketing community worldwide. His ability to bounce back and perform at such a high level has solidified his reputation as one of the most exciting players in modern cricket.
Pant played a pivotal role in India’s 280-run victory over Bangladesh in the first Test match in Chennai. His explosive knock of 109 off just 128 balls in the second innings, along with a gritty 39 in the first, showcased his aggressive style and his ability to turn the game around.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s rise
Yashasvi Jaiswal, another young Indian star, has continued to climb up the rankings. His consistency with the bat has seen him rise to No. 5 in the ICC Test rankings, overtaking Pant briefly before the latest update. Jaiswal’s rise puts him in the elite company of players like Joe Root, Kane Williamson, and Steven Smith. These players have dominated Test cricket for years, and for Jaiswal to break into this group at such a young age speaks volumes about his potential.
England’s Joe Root and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson remain entrenched at the top of the ICC Test rankings. Root, with 899 rating points, continues to lead the pack.
Shubman Gill continues to impress and has made significant gains in the Test rankings. After his unbeaten 119 in the second innings against Bangladesh, Gill moved up five spots to reach No. 14.
Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya had an outstanding performance in the first Test against New Zealand in Galle. His 4 for 136 and 5 for 68 earned him the Player-of-the-Match award and helped him rise five spots to No. 8 in the ICC bowling rankings.
The bowling rankings continue to be dominated by R Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
Gurbaz rising star
Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz has had a breakthrough series in ODIs, moving up ten spots to No. 8 after his stellar performances against South Africa. Gurbaz’s century and half-century in the final two matches helped Afghanistan secure a historic series win.
Rashid Khan, Afghanistan’s talismanic bowler, continues to climb the ODI bowling rankings. After taking seven wickets in two matches against South Africa, Rashid surged up eight spots to No. 3, just behind Keshav Maharaj and Adam Zampa.
Australia’s Travis Head has moved into the top 10 of the ODI batting rankings, thanks to his remarkable 154* against England. His all-round performance, which also included two wickets, saw him rise to No. 9 in the rankings.
