India Register Their Lowest Ever Score At Home In The First Test Against New Zealand

Team India was bowled out for 46 runs in their first innings of the opening Test against New Zealand on Day 2 (October 17) at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, which is hosting the first match of the three-match series.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, India had a poor start, failing to build momentum. Rohit Sharma (2 off 16) was the first to go, becoming Southee’s sole wicket in the innings. Virat Kohli (0 off 9) and Sarfaraz Khan (0 off 3) also fell without scoring, leaving India struggling at 12/3 after 10 overs.

Rishabh Pant (20 off 49) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (13 off 63) came together to stabilize the innings, forming a partnership that added 21 runs before Jaiswal was caught at point.

Following this, India suffered three consecutive ducks as KL Rahul (0 off 6), Ravindra Jadeja (0 off 6), and Ravichandran Ashwin (0 off 1) all failed to score. The lower order managed to add only 11 runs, leaving India with a total of just 46 runs.

This marks India’s lowest total at home, surpassing their previous low of 75 all out against the West Indies in Delhi in 1987. It is also the third time India has scored under 50 in Test history, following scores of 36/9 against Australia in Adelaide in 2020 and 42 all out against England at Lord’s in 1974.

This was the second occasion where five Indian batters were dismissed for ducks against New Zealand, the first being in the 1999 Test at Mohali.

Aiming to chase down 46 runs in their first innings, New Zealand has made a solid start, scoring 30 runs in eight overs. Tom Latham and Devon Conway have navigated Bumrah’s early spell effectively, giving New Zealand a boost as they seek to surpass the low total.
