‘Rishabh Pant Will Not Keep Wickets…’: BCCI Issues Important Update On Wicketkeeper-Batter Before Day 3 Of India Vs New Zealand

India‘s wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who left the field on Day 2 due to an injury while keeping wickets, will miss the Day 3 match against New Zealand. He was struck on his kneecap—the same leg he had surgery on after a road accident.

The injury occurred during the 37th over when a delivery from Ravindra Jadeja turned and bounced low, hitting Pant on the surgically operated knee.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on X, formerly Twitter, that Pant will not be keeping wickets on Day 3 as the medical team continues to monitor his condition.

“UPDATE: Mr Rishabh Pant will not keep wickets on Day 3. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress” posted BCCI.

Dhurv Jurel is currently taking over wicketkeeping duties for the injured Pant.

Rohit Sharma discusses Rishabh Pant’s injury

India captain Rohit Sharma revealed that wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was hit on the same knee during Day 2 of the first Test against New Zealand, where he had previously undergone surgery in 2023.

Pant’s knee injury during the Bengaluru Test has raised concerns about his availability for the rest of the match. He left the field after being struck on the knee while keeping during the second day of play on October 17.

The incident occurred in the evening session when Ravindra Jadeja bowled a flatter delivery that Devon Conway missed while coming down the wicket. Pant couldn’t collect the ball cleanly, resulting in a blow to his right knee, causing him visible pain.

The physio attended to him, and after a short delay, he was helped off the field. Pant, who was playing his third Test since recovering from a serious car crash in December 2022 that badly injured his knee, made his return to cricket during the 2024 IPL before rejoining the Test side last month.

Pant, clearly in pain, collapsed to the ground and was helped off the field, with Dhruv Jurel taking over wicketkeeping duties for the rest of the day.

“Unfortunately, the ball hit him directly on his kneecap—the same leg he had surgery on. There’s some swelling and tenderness in the muscles right now. It’s a precautionary measure,” Rohit said during the post-match press conference.
