Prithvi Shaw Dropped From Mumbai Squad For Fitness Concerns

Prithvi Shaw’s career faces yet another challenge as the young opener has been excluded from Mumbai’s squad for their upcoming Ranji Trophy match. In Shaw’s place, left-handed opener Akhil Herwadkar has been included, bringing with him experience from 41 Ranji games.

Another change in the squad involves Tanush Kotian, who is joining India A for their tour of Australia, and he is replaced by 28-year-old left-arm spinner Karsh Kothari. Although the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) did not officially explain Shaw’s omission, it is speculated to be a warning for his lack of discipline.

Disciplinary Issues and Irregular Practice

Sources within the MCA suggest that Shaw’s exclusion is a result of concerns over his fitness and lack of commitment to practice. Shaw has been reportedly skipping net sessions, often attending irregularly even after poor performances.

Compared to other Mumbai players like Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur, and captain Ajinkya Rahane, who maintain regular practice, Shaw’s inconsistency has raised concerns. It has been noted that his fitness, particularly his weight, has also been an issue. This exclusion may serve as a wake-up call for Shaw, whose career has been marred by off-field controversies in recent years.

Mumbai’s Upcoming Match and Shaw’s Future

Mumbai’s selectors, including chairman Sanjay Patil and other members, were unanimous in their decision to drop Shaw, believing it might encourage the young cricketer to take his fitness and discipline more seriously. Shaw, who was the Man of the Match in his Test debut in 2018, has seen his career decline due to non-cricket-related issues.

In the current Ranji season, his performances have been lackluster, scoring 7 and 12 against Baroda, and 1 and 39 not out against Maharashtra. It remains unclear if he will be recalled for future matches, but the selectors hope this decision prompts a positive change. Mumbai’s next Ranji match is against Tripura from October 26 to 29.
