On Day 1 of the second Test between India and New Zealand in Pune, Sarfaraz Khan played a pivotal role in securing the wicket of New Zealand opener Will Young. Despite wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant’s reluctance, Sarfaraz convinced captain Rohit Sharma to go for the Decision Review System (DRS).
The review proved successful, with Young caught by Pant after a faint edge. This moment marked a significant breakthrough for India, giving them their second wicket of the morning. Sarfaraz’s aggressive appeal and determination were key, even when Pant, typically relied on for such decisions, was unsure.
A Crucial Wicket for India
The dismissal occurred in the 24th over, with Ravichandran Ashwin bowling. Young attempted a flick shot but missed, and though the umpire dismissed India’s initial appeal, Sarfaraz was certain the batsman had made contact. He rushed to Rohit, persuading him to take the DRS.

Virat Kohli’s support added weight to Sarfaraz’s conviction, and Rohit decided to review the decision. The UltraEdge technology revealed a faint touch of Young’s glove, leading the third umpire to overturn the on-field call. This gave India a crucial wicket at a time when Young and Devon Conway were forming a solid partnership.
Sarfaraz’s Impact Acknowledged
Sarfaraz’s quick thinking was praised by commentators and former cricketers alike. Former New Zealand bowler Simon Doull credited Sarfaraz for his proactive approach, while former Indian opener Abhinav Mukund emphasized that Pant, usually dependable in DRS situations, had been uncertain. Sarfaraz’s insistence and ability to read the game played a critical role in breaking the growing partnership.
Young’s dismissal for 18 was a turning point, helping India regain control after a strong start by New Zealand. At lunch, New Zealand was 92/2, and Conway at 47. India’s Ashwin was instrumental, having earlier dismissed New Zealand captain Tom Latham with a superb delivery.
