In the first Test in India, playing against New Zealand, Washington Sundar performed brilliantly in bowling and scored career-best bowling figures of 7/59 and restricted New Zealand to 259. He silenced critics and brought a dramatic change in the side of the match in favour of India with a brilliant performance that can only be justified by his selection in the side.
India made three changes in its lineup by replacing Kuldeep Yadav, KL Rahul, and Mohammed Siraj with Sundar, Shubman Gill, and Akash Deep. Sundar started his Test cricket in the famous Gabba Test in January 2021 and has played only five Tests in his short career so far, making him an irregular. Now, he has been overshadowed by India’s spin threesome—Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin.
Sundar, however, took advantage of the situation and produced an outstanding spin bowling performance. India is already in charge thanks to his seven wicket haul, and his versatility makes him an invaluable weapon. Sundar has established a solid reputation for himself in India’s Test setup with this performance, which could lead to more chances down the road.
Washington Sundar picked up his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket:
Washington Sundar, who bowled 23.1 overs on the opening day of the second Test against New Zealand Pune, Maharashtra, finished with statistics of 7/59, proving that Team India’s decision to bring him in was a brilliant one.
In addition to taking his first five wickets in Test cricket, Sundar took the greatest bowling stats in this location for the longest format. He beat fellow Indian pacer Umesh Yadav and Australians Steve O’Keefe and Nathan Lyon to claim the record. Additionally, he becomes the first bowler from India to take a fifer at this location.
The 25-year-old all-rounder also becomes the fourth-best bowler in the history of Test matches between India and New Zealand, joining an exclusive group of Indian bowlers. Better numbers are held by people like S Venkataraghavan, EAS Prasanna, and Ravi Ashwin than by Sundar.
