The visitors won the toss and opted to bat first. Openers Devon Conway and Tom Latham negotiated the fast bowlers, adding 30 runs in seven overs. Ravichandran Ashwin struck in his first over, dismissing Latham for 15. The experienced spinner also removed Will Young for 18 to secure his second wicket.

Conway and Rachin Ravindra put together 62 runs for the third wicket before Conway was dismissed for a solid 76. Washington Sundar provided India with two key breakthroughs just before tea, taking out Ravindra (65) and Tom Blundell (3), leaving New Zealand at 201 for five.

Sundar excelled, achieving his first five-wicket haul as the visitors collapsed from 201 for five to 259 all out. Mitchell Santner contributed 33 runs off 51 balls at the end for the Black Caps. The 25-year-old off-spinner finished with career-best figures of 7 for 59, while Ashwin added three more wickets to his tally.

New Zealand leads the three-match series 1-0 after a convincing eight-wicket victory in the first Test in Bengaluru.
