In a surprising turn during the third ODI match between West Indies and England, fast bowler Alzarri Joseph found himself at the center of a controversy that quickly drew attention from fans and experts alike. The heated moment occurred when Joseph disagreed with his captain Shai Hope about field placement, ultimately resulting in Joseph leaving the field unannounced. This action did not go unnoticed by head coach Daren Sammy, who later called out the behavior as unacceptable, sparking discussions about discipline and professionalism in cricket.

Alzarri Joseph’s Disagreement with Captain Shai Hope

The pivotal incident happened in the fourth over when Joseph, visibly frustrated with a fielding arrangement, engaged in a brief but tense exchange with Captain Shai Hope. Joseph bowled a strong delivery and managed to get Jordan Cox out caught behind but refrained from celebrating the wicket. Instead, he returned to his mark, still visibly annoyed.

At the end of the over, Joseph left the field abruptly, heading toward the dressing room without notifying his team. This left West Indies temporarily with only ten players on the field, creating a challenging situation for the team, which had to start the next over without him. Such actions disrupt the team’s rhythm and raise questions about the player’s commitment to the team’s unified strategy.

“Behaviour like that is unacceptable on my cricket field,” Sammy said to TalkSPORT after play. “We will be friends…but in the culture I’m trying to build, that’s unacceptable. We will definitely have a chat about that.”

Despite the early setback, Joseph returned to the field in the sixth over but only resumed bowling in the twelfth. Over the course of the match, he delivered a mixed performance, completing his 10 overs with figures of 2 for 45, including the dismissals of Jordan Cox and Dan Mousley. Although he achieved crucial breakthroughs, Joseph’s actions off the ball became a focal point of the game.

Head Coach Daren Sammy in Building Team Morale

Daren Sammy, appointed as head coach in May 2023, has brought a new vision to West Indies cricket, centered around discipline and mutual respect. Known for his ability to engage players positively while addressing tough issues, Sammy has played a significant role in fostering a unified team spirit.

“I pride myself on having the difficult conversations,” Sammy said. “But in a way that everybody understands what is needed to be done. To see guys going out there and slowly progressing in the right direction makes me proud. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but it’s one that I’m quite passionate about.”

The incident with Joseph underscores the need for accountability and professionalism in cricket. Sammy has made it his mission to reinforce these values within the team, stressing that personal conflicts should never impact the collective spirit.

“We’ve got a couple of senior players who were not in Sri Lanka that we expect to be back,” Sammy said. “Our T20 team is our most successful team and our most settled team. So, yes, we incorporate some new guys to give them that exposure, but our T20 team normally picks itself.”

The West Indies emerged victorious in the ODI series against England, clinching a 2-1 win. Looking ahead, Sammy’s team will face England in a five-match T20 series, with hopes to carry forward the momentum. Sammy hinted at the return of several senior players, including Nicholas Pooran and Akeal Hosein, which could further strengthen the team.
