With the IPL 2025 mega auction approaching, Rishabh Pant is set to be one of the top contenders, sparking high expectations for a bidding war. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) legend AB de Villiers has expressed doubts about RCB’s chances of securing Pant due to the anticipated high bids. Pant, released by Delhi Capitals, is expected to be in high demand, with franchises likely competing aggressively.
De Villiers believes RCB won’t be able to match the final bid, and speculates that Punjab Kings (PBKS), now coached by Pant’s former Delhi mentor Ricky Ponting, could make a strong push for him. Entering the auction with the largest purse, PBKS seems well-positioned to make a substantial offer for Pant.
Possible Punjab Kings Move for Pant
De Villiers hinted at a strong connection between Pant and Ponting, suggesting that PBKS might use their financial advantage to reunite the pair. “I think it’s highly unlikely that RCB will get Rishabh Pant; he will be too expensive,” de Villiers shared on his YouTube channel, noting PBKS’s intent to spend big for high-caliber players.
De Villiers added that while it would be ideal for RCB to secure Pant, his personal feeling is that PBKS is a likely destination for the star wicketkeeper-batter. This auction, to be held in Riyadh on November 24 and 25, will determine where Pant will play next season, with teams strategizing for key additions to their rosters.
De Villiers’ Strategy for RCB: Focus on Bowlers and Local Talent
Rather than pursuing Pant, de Villiers advised RCB to target a balanced roster, specifically in their bowling lineup and local talent pool. He highlighted the importance of a “world-class spinner” and emphasized the need for quality local players, especially from Bengaluru, whom he feels RCB has overlooked. De Villiers even suggested KL Rahul, a former RCB player and proven batsman, as a more cost-effective alternative to Pant.
Rahul, who is expected to enter the auction, could bring experience and leadership, potentially succeeding Virat Kohli. De Villiers believes Rahul’s talent and form make him a valuable addition. Ultimately, de Villiers wants RCB to focus on strengthening their bowling and acquiring promising local players, which he feels will be essential to RCB’s success in the upcoming season.
