Regular captain Rohit Sharma is missing for the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia. India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has announced that the men’s cricket team will be captained by Jasprit Bumrah. The first match of the series is set to commence in Perth on November 22. The reasons for Rohit’s unavailability remain undisclosed as well.

The front-runner to head India in Rohit’s place is Bumrah. Bumrah’s career would reach a major turning point with this possible leadership position, demonstrating his development as a vital player. Bumrah is qualified to take on the additional duty because of his background and skill as a pace spearhead. Ahead of the pivotal series against Australia, Gambhir’s confirmation clarifies India’s leadership situation.

“Jasprit Bumrah is going to lead in Perth”- Gautam Gambhir

The head coach of India, Gautam Gambhir, has stated that if regular captain Rohit Sharma is unable to lead the national men’s cricket team in the first Test of the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia, pace leader Jasprit Bumrah will take over.

“At the moment there’s no confirmation. Hopefully, he will be available. We will take a call closer to the first test if Rohit is not available. KL Rahul is there. Abhimanyu is there. We will try to field the best possible playing XI,” Gambhir said on Rohit’s participation in the Perth Test while addressing the pre-departure press conference.

“Jasprit Bumrah is the vice captain; obviously, if Rohit Sharma is not available, he will be leading the side,” Gambhir added when asked who would don the captain’s hat in Rohit’s absence.

Australia and India will play a five-matcv Test series for the first time. After a recent 3-0 series loss to New Zealand, India’s aspirations of making it to the World Test Championship Final are greatly impacted by the forthcoming series. India presently trails table-topper Australia in the rankings with a points percentage of 58.33%.
