The 22-year-old Tilak Varma came in to bat on the third ball of the innings after Marco Jansen dismissed Sanju Samson for a duck. Despite the early setback, the Hyderabad-born cricketer looked focused from the start, forming a 107-run partnership with Abhishek Sharma, who scored a rapid half-century off 25 balls.
Though the team experienced a brief collapse, Varma’s unbeaten 107 off 56 balls helped India finish with a total of 219/6 in 20 overs.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long while”- Tilak Varma
After his unbeaten 107-run innings, Tilak Varma told the host broadcaster that he was proud of his “incredible” performance and felt it was an important knock for both him and Abhishek Sharma. He remarked:
“Really very happy. I was waiting for this moment for a long time. Coming after injury and scoring a hundred, it is incredible. It was challenging at the start – wicket was two-paced.”
”After that, it went well. I tried to hold my shape and was trying to focus on the basics. We (Abhishek and me) both were under pressure and this knock was important for both of us.”
The four-match T20I series is currently tied at 1-1.
