Dulip Samaraweera Faces Extended 10-Year Ban From Cricket Australia

Cricket Australia (CA) has imposed a new ban on former Sri Lankan Test cricketer and coach Dulip Samaraweera following a second allegation of inappropriate conduct. This recent ban, spanning 10 years, will be served concurrently with Samaraweera’s existing 20-year suspension.

First Allegation and Initial 20-Year Ban

Samaraweera’s coaching career took a significant hit when allegations of inappropriate behavior towards a female player surfaced. Cricket Australia investigated, resulting in a 20-year ban from any involvement in Australian cricket. Samaraweera, who denied the allegations, chose not to engage with the investigation process, leading to this stringent response. The suspension led to strong statements from Cricket Victoria, where officials labeled his behavior “utterly reprehensible.”

New Allegations and Additional 10-Year Ban

A second allegation has now come to light, with claims of further misconduct while Samaraweera was working as a private coach, despite being employed by Cricket Victoria. This new accusation, which Samaraweera also denied, led Cricket Australia to add a 10-year ban for breaching its code of conduct. Samaraweera again opted out of participating in the investigation, which emphasized the seriousness of the case and CA’s commitment to maintaining its standards.

Cricket Victoria’s Stance and Response

Cricket Victoria has been vocal in its condemnation of Samaraweera’s actions, with CEO Nick Cummins emphasizing that his conduct was a “betrayal of everything we stand for.” Cricket Victoria has also expressed unwavering support for the victims, ensuring resources and assistance for those impacted by Samaraweera’s actions. Cummins reaffirmed the organization’s zero-tolerance approach, especially in matters that compromise staff or players’ safety and well-being.

“The victim in this case has demonstrated incredible strength of character and courage in speaking up,” Cummins said after the initial charge.  “She will continue to receive our ongoing support to allow her to achieve her goals on and off the field.

“From an organisation perspective, the safety and wellbeing of everyone at Cricket Victoria is paramount. We will not tolerate any behaviour which compromises that position, or our people, and will always support our culture of speaking up.”

Cricket Australia’s Code of Conduct Policy

Cricket Australia upholds a strict code of conduct for all players, coaches, and associated staff. This policy aims to ensure a safe and respectful environment across all levels of cricket. Violations are met with decisive action to preserve the integrity and trust within the sport. The two bans against Samaraweera highlight CA’s commitment to protecting the welfare of its players and setting a precedent for zero tolerance toward misconduct.

Cricket Australia has established various reporting mechanisms for players and staff to report misconduct. Victims are provided with confidentiality, support services, and counseling as part of CA’s victim-centered approach. This framework encourages victims to come forward, knowing they will be supported without judgment or compromise to their career.

The Australian cricket community and fans have largely supported Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria’s actions. Many have praised their commitment to a zero-tolerance approach, noting the importance of protecting young and vulnerable players from exploitation.
