The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made significant changes to the structure of the IPL 2025 auction, cutting the player register from 1,574 names to a more manageable 574. This move aims to streamline the process and allow franchises to focus on acquiring talent that best suits their needs. However, not all players on this list will go under the hammer, as the auction will involve an accelerated process after the initial marquee players have been presented.
The Revised Auction Format
The BCCI has taken a strategic step by trimming the player register from 1,574 to 574. This adjustment was necessary to make the auction more efficient and avoid an overwhelming selection process. The highlight of this year’s auction is the introduction of an accelerated process, which allows franchises to focus on specific players they find most valuable.
“Once these players (117-574) have been presented, franchises will be requested to submit the names of players (unpresented /unsold) from all those on the full list of 574 for further accelerated presentation. This will be covered in more detail at the auction briefing on 23rd November 2024.”
The auction will begin with the marquee sets, followed by rounds dedicated to capped players (batters, all-rounders, bowlers, and wicketkeepers). Once this phase concludes, the focus will shift to uncapped players. This structured approach ensures every category of players gets fair consideration.
Marquee Players in the list
The marquee players are the most sought-after talent in the IPL auction. This year, the list includes big names like Jos Buttler, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and Mitchell Starc. A second set features stars such as KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, and David Miller.
However, franchises were expecting more than just 12 marquee players, expressing disappointment that some prominent names were left out. The limited number of marquee players surprised many franchises. Teams had anticipated around 20 marquee players but had to adjust their strategies to the reduced pool.
Notable Players in the Final Register
The names added are: Faridoon Dawoodzai (Afghanistan), Michael Neser (Australia), Oliver Davies (Australia), Kaushik Methi (CAB), Prayas Barman (CAB), Ramesh Prasad (CAB), Prashant Chauhan (CAU), Dhruv Kaushik (DDCA), Lalit Yadav (DDCA), Sumit Kumar Beniwal (DDCA), Tejas Dahiya (DDCA), Yash Dabas (DDCA), Sumeet Verma (HPCA), Kunal Singh Chibb (JKCA), Sushant Mishra (JSCA), Vignesh Puthur (KCA), Deepak Devadiga (KSCA), Samarth Nagraj (KSCA), Akash Parkar (MCA), Ayaz Khan (MCA), Tripuresh Singh (MPCA), Khrievitso Kense (NCA), Will Young (New Zealand), Aradhya Shukla (PCA), Vishal Godara (RCA), Lizaad Williams (South Africa), Dumindu Sewmina (Sri Lanka), Ehsan Malinga (Sri Lanka), Mohit Rathee (SSCB), Jaffer Jamal (TNCA), Naman Tiwari (UPCA), Rituraj Sharma (UPCA), Vasu Vats (UPCA), Vijay Kumar (UPCA), Vijay Yadav (UPCA), Unmukt Chand (USA), Abhishek Saini (UTCA), Pradyuman Kumar Singh (UTCA) and Odean Smith (West Indies).
Strategic Adjustments for Teams
Franchises must plan carefully, especially for the accelerated phase. They have limited time to identify and nominate players who fit their team requirements. This format demands precision and foresight. Smaller franchises with tighter budgets stand to benefit from this process. By focusing on specific players in the accelerated pool, they can potentially secure impactful additions without engaging in bidding wars for marquee names.
Auction Timing and Coordination
The auction timings were carefully planned to avoid overlapping with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With matches running until 2:50 PM IST, the auction will commence at 3 PM IST, ensuring cricket fans can enjoy both events without conflict. As the cricketing world gears up for the IPL 2025, the new auction format promises excitement, competition, and a fair shot for emerging talent.
