In a last-minute adjustment to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) preparations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called in left-arm pacer Yash Dayal to replace the injured Khaleel Ahmed in the reserve players’ list. Khaleel, who sustained an unspecified niggle during training, was unable to bowl in the nets.
The medical team recommended rest for the Rajasthan pacer, leading to his return home. Meanwhile, Dayal, who was part of India’s Test squad during the Bangladesh series and recently traveled to South Africa for the T20I series without playing a game, flew directly to Perth from Johannesburg.
“It was a like-for-like replacement as the team needed to simulate conditions to counter Mitchell Starc,” a BCCI official shared. Initially, Dayal was set to participate in the A Test series but was instead sent to South Africa. The decision to bring in Dayal underscores the management’s focus on thorough preparation, especially with Khaleel unable to contribute due to his injury.
Uncertainty Over Khaleel Ahmed’s Domestic Comeback
Khaleel Ahmed’s availability for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy remains unclear. Released by the Delhi Capitals, Khaleel hopes to make an impression ahead of the IPL mega auction, where he could spark interest among franchises. However, his recovery timeline might impact his participation in domestic cricket and, consequently, his prospects in the auction.
Yash Dayal, on the other hand, has been retained by Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the upcoming IPL season. His inclusion in the reserves for the BGT is seen as a significant opportunity, as the Indian team seeks to replicate the left-arm pace threat posed by Australian spearhead Mitchell Starc.
Injury Scare for Yashasvi Jaiswal
The Indian camp experienced another brief concern when Yashasvi Jaiswal felt discomfort in his shoulder while batting during practice on Tuesday. The injury required immediate medical attention, raising alarm within the team. Fortunately, Jaiswal returned to the nets on Wednesday, much to the relief of the management.
India’s 2024-25 tour of Australia is critical, and the team is leaving no stone unturned to ensure thorough preparation. The inclusion of Yash Dayal as a like-for-like replacement demonstrates the BCCI’s proactive approach to handling unexpected challenges ahead of the high-stakes series.
