Indian pacer Umran Malik, known for his fiery pace, is keen to revive his cricketing career after a challenging phase. Once a sensation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, Malik’s performance has seen highs and lows over the years.
Speaking exclusively to CricTracker, the 25-year-old shared his ambitions for the upcoming IPL season, his journey in cricket, and his roadmap to returning to the Indian team.
Challenges and Aspirations
Hailing from Jammu & Kashmir, Malik burst onto the scene during IPL 2022, finishing as the fourth-highest wicket-taker, which earned him a national team debut. However, the years since have been difficult.
Despite featuring in 10 ODIs (13 wickets) and 8 T20Is (11 wickets), his form dwindled, with just five wickets in nine IPL games across two years at an economy rate of 10.57. Injuries further hampered his progress, sidelining him during crucial periods.
Now, with the IPL 2024 mega auction approaching, Malik has registered himself with a base price of ₹75 lakh, aiming to secure a consistent spot in the league. He expressed his desire to play all games for his new team, pick 20-25 wickets, and use the opportunity to impress selectors and make a national comeback.
Evolving Cricket in Jammu & Kashmir
Malik credits the evolving cricket infrastructure in Jammu & Kashmir for nurturing talent. “There are now more grounds and practice areas, and youngsters are motivated to perform well,” he said.
Former cricketer Irfan Pathan, who mentored the state team, has also played a pivotal role in uplifting local cricket. “Because of him, many young players have gained confidence to play better,” Malik noted.
The fast bowler also highlighted the support he received from teammates like Abdul Samad in IPL and Arshdeep Singh in the Indian team, who frequently discuss bowling strategies to improve performance.
Road to Recovery and Future Goals
After recovering from injury, Malik is focused on refining his skills, including mastering outswingers and inswingers, to become a versatile bowler. Reflecting on past IPL moments, he cherishes his five-wicket haul against Gujarat Titans and his tight death overs against Andre Russell. His favorite venue remains Wankhede Stadium, where he achieved those milestones.
Determined and optimistic, Malik is ready to overcome setbacks, continue working hard, and leave a lasting impact in the next IPL season. His ultimate goal remains to represent India across all formats, bringing pride to his state and team.
