New Zealand all-rounder James Neesham, known for his explosive batting and all-around skills, is set to be a key player in the inaugural Nepal Premier League (NPL). The tournament, scheduled from November 30 to December 21 at the TU Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, marks a new chapter in Nepal’s cricketing journey. Neesham, who has represented New Zealand in 12 Tests, 76 ODIs, and 79 T20Is, will play for the Janakpur Bolts.
Despite his last Test appearance in 2016 and recent ODI stint during the 2023 Cricket World Cup, Neesham remains a sought-after figure in global franchise cricket. His impressive career includes stints with IPL teams like Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals, along with participation in leagues across South Africa, England, Pakistan, and more.
Excitement for Nepal’s Cricketing Landscape
When asked about his expectations from the NPL, Neesham expressed enthusiasm for experiencing Nepal’s cricket culture. “I’ve heard amazing things about the passion locals have for cricket and the beautiful surroundings of Nepal. I’m expecting great crowds and an unforgettable atmosphere,” he shared. Known for his big-hitting abilities and all-around contributions, Neesham plans to apply the same approach he uses in other leagues. “My goal is to contribute across all facets of the game,” he added, emphasizing his readiness to adapt to the dynamic nature of T20 cricket.
Neesham also highlighted the importance of leveraging local knowledge. “I’ll rely on my teammates for insights into conditions and opposition, but my international experience should help in managing the ever-changing scenarios of T20 matches,” he noted.
Strengthening Bonds with Janakpur Bolts
Having recently played for the Bolts in other competitions, Neesham chose to continue his association with the franchise due to his positive experiences. “The connection with the Bolts has been fantastic, and I wanted to build on that,” he explained. His off-field humor, particularly on social media, has also won him fans worldwide. Neesham plans to engage with fans during his time in Nepal, stating, “Fans are the bedrock of our sport. I hope my performances can further ignite Nepal’s love for cricket.”
Exploring Nepal Beyond Cricket
Beyond cricket, Neesham is eager to explore Nepal’s culture and natural beauty. “Experiencing local cultures is always a highlight of visiting a new place. Nepal’s beauty is well-known, and I’m excited to see it firsthand,” he remarked. When asked about potential adventures, such as an Everest trek, Neesham remained open to the idea but emphasized that his current focus is on the NPL.
Concluding with a message for fans, Neesham encouraged them to support the Janakpur Bolts, promising, “We’ll do our best to put on a show for you all.” As one of the biggest stars in the NPL, Neesham’s participation is set to bring excitement and attention to Nepal’s burgeoning cricket scene.
