Prithvi Shaw encountered a significant setback at the IPL 2025 mega auction when he went unsold, with no franchises expressing interest in him. His ongoing issues with form and fitness have greatly affected his market value, resulting in his absence from the bidding.
This setback is a major blow to Shaw’s attempts to revive his career, particularly after being released by Delhi Capitals prior to the auction. With this disappointment, doubts now surround Shaw’s future in both the IPL and international cricket.
Prithvi Shaw speaks out about not selected in the IPL 2025 auction
In a podcast, Shaw’s former coach Jwala Singh discussed the reasons behind the batter’s decline and his unsold status at the IPL auction in Jeddah. When asked by the host why Shaw, despite his immense talent, seemed to have vanished from the scene, Jwala Singh shared:
“Prithvi came to me in 2015 and worked with me for three years. And when he came he had not played Mumbai Under-16 matches and his father asked me to guide him. Then in next year, he played the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy and scored big in selection matches. And I worked very hard on him.”
“Basically he was talented from the beginning, I will not take full credit because many coaches have worked for him, but at that time it was only me. I was excited when he played the Under-19 World Cup because he was my first student to do so.”
“Before leaving for the Under-19 World Cup, he had celebrated his birthday with me. But after that I have not seen him, that was 2017, we are in 2024, I have not seen him, he has not come to me.”
The host questioned why Shaw, once compared to legends after his Test century, struggled with incoming deliveries, weight, and confidence, while Yashasvi Jaiswal, equally talented, succeeded.
Jwala Singh, who also coached Yashasvi Jaiswal, responded, “I believe it’s about the process, which we call work ethic. Talent is just a seed, but turning it into a tree requires consistency. That consistency comes from lifestyle, work ethic, and discipline. In my opinion, he lacks that consistency.”
“Success in cricket requires constant improvement, as even Sachin Tendulkar refined his skills and fitness. Players fail when they stray from the process, but Yashasvi excels due to his strong work ethic and focus. That is the main difference.”

After underwhelming performances in the first two rounds of the 2024 Ranji Trophy, Shaw was dropped from Mumbai’s squad for the third round.
Reports suggest the decision stemmed not only from his poor form but also disciplinary issues, including missed training sessions, further compounding his challenges.
Shaw’s career has been a mix of highs and lows. In 2018, the ICC recognized him as one of the top five breakout stars in men’s cricket. However, in 2019, his progress was derailed by a doping ban from the BCCI, sidelining him until November that year.
