In the second Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, Mitchell Starc showcased his expertise with the pink ball. The left-arm paceman bowled an exceptionally devastating spell and brought up his 15th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. He captured crucial wickets of the mighty Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who put the Indian batting aboard on the ropes.
“Starc’s international record with the pink ball will prove his talent and capability: four times a five-wicket haul in a day-night Test—the most a pace bowler has gotten before the likes of Trent Boult and Josh Hazlewood, each having three such hauls.
Starc has been an asset to the Australian squad courtesy his ability to bowl exceptional spells even at such conditions, i.e., day-night. His brilliant performance recently will force him to be stronger in confidence and hold him up amid such giant pace bowlers globally.
Mitchell Starc took six wickets in the first innings:
Mitchell Starc has reached a phenomenal new milestone on the cricketing front by becoming the fourth bowler from Australia to take over 350 wickets across all formats in home conditions.
Joining the elite club of legendary Shane Warne and Brett Lee, Starc continued to perform when India won the toss and opted to bat on an overcast afternoon. He started with an early jolt when he cleaned Yashasvi Jaiswal for a golden duck with a swinging delivery that hit the young Indian opener’s pads.
Starc wreaked havoc on the Indian batting, including none other but key wickets like KL Rahul, R Ashwin, and Nitish Reddy. His relentless spell caused a mini collapse, as after India were up to 69 for 1, they went tumbling to 81 for 4.
Starc finished with a mesmerising figure of 6 for 48 as Australia bowled India out for 180, which is the lowest first innings total in a pink-ball Test in Adelaide. Starc’s display is a mark of not just his skill but experience and would thus probably be crucial to Australia’s chances of success in the series.
