Day 2 of the second Test between India and Australia at Adelaide turned out to be a rollercoaster, dominated by Travis Head’s brilliant 140-run knock. The hosts were looking to capitalize on a decent first innings start, while India’s bowlers aimed to restrict them to a manageable score.
Australia’s Strong Start
Despite losing early wickets, Australia’s middle-order rose to the occasion, with Head leading the charge. His aggressive intent put immense pressure on the Indian bowling attack. India banked on their pace trio to exploit the conditions, but Head’s counterattacking approach forced them to reconsider their plans.
Travis Head’s Game-Changing 140-Run Knock
Against the fiery duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, Head showcased resilience and brilliance. He weathered the storm and turned the tide with his aggressive shot-making. Head found crucial support from the lower order, which allowed him to play with freedom. His boundaries, particularly square of the wicket, left the Indian fielders scrambling.
Siraj-Yorker Dismissal
Mohammed Siraj delivered a pinpoint yorker to dismiss Travis Head, breaking the crucial momentum for Australia. What followed was an exchange of words between Siraj and Head, adding drama to the day’s play.
The Indian pacer’s animated celebration didn’t sit well with Head, leading to a verbal spat. The Adelaide crowd expressed their disapproval, booing Siraj for his aggressive send-off.
Head Revealed The Chat
Head, in his post-match interviews, voiced his disappointment at the incident, suggesting that India’s actions were not in line with the spirit of the game.
“I said well bowled but he thought otherwise. When he pointed me towards the shed, he got a little bite back from me. Yeah, slightly disappointed with the way that transpired, with a couple of past innings but it is what it is. If they want to react like that, if that’s how they want to represent themselves then so be it,” Head told Fox Cricket after Stumps on Day 2.
He emphasized that while he understands competitive spirit, there’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed.
Head added, “Not as heated as I would like it to be. I don’t want to give it much air time. With the way I play the game, I’d like a better reaction. I was surprised at the reaction in terms of the situation of the game and the lead-up and there was no confrontation leading up to it and I felt like it was probably, yeah, a little bit far at the time and that’s why I’m disappointed in the reaction that I gave back but I’m also going to stand up for myself. I’d like to think in our team that we wouldn’t do that, it’s not how I’d like to play the game and I’d feel like my teammates are the same and if I’d seen that in those circumstances I’d probably call it out, which I did.”
Australia ended Day 2 with a significant lead, putting India on the back foot. India, at 128/5, still trails by 29 runs, with Rishabh Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy holding the fort.
