Before the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, Australian captain Pat Cummins highlighted the effectiveness of their short-ball tactic against India during the Adelaide Test. He claimed that the strategy had worked well for his team.
However, Indian batter Shubman Gill offered a different perspective at a press conference ahead of the Brisbane Test. Gill disagreed with Cummins’ assertion, noting that aside from the tail-enders, only one Indian batter was dismissed by the short ball. He questioned the success Cummins referred to, stating he was unsure of what the Australian skipper meant.
“Short ball pe safalta I think tail-ender ko chodke mujhe lagta hai ki ek hi batsman out hua hai short ball pe. Toh mujhe pata nahin kaun si safalta ki woh baat kar rahe hain (I think except for the tail-enders only one batter got out to the short ball so I do not know what success about the short ball he is talking about),” Gill said.
India claimed victory in the first Test in Perth, but Australia responded with a commanding win in Adelaide. With the series tied at 1-1, the teams now head to The Gabba for the third Test.

Pat Cummins expresses confidence in Steve Smith’s performance ahead of the Brisbane Test
Australian batter Steve Smith’s recent struggles with form have raised concerns, as he has been unable to make an impact in the first two Tests. However, skipper Pat Cummins remains confident that Smith can turn things around at The Gabba and feels a significant innings is just around the corner.
“You look at his record, stats would suggest (runs) are not far around the corner. In particular this year, he’s looking fantastic in the nets, just looking really sharp, looking like he’s got plenty of time. doing all the right things like he always does.”
“He got caught down the leg side last game. I don’t know if you can look into that too much, so I’m sure a big score’s just around the corner,” Cummins said about Smith in a press conference.
