The highly anticipated third Test between India and Australia began on a disappointing note as rain disrupted most of the first day’s play. After winning the toss, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma chose to bowl first, aiming to exploit the seam-friendly conditions at The Gabba.
However, the Australian openers showed resilience, leaving India wicketless in the initial phase. Just as Akash Deep began troubling the Australian duo with precise bowling, rain interrupted the game again.
With unfavorable weather predicted for all five days, there is a strong likelihood that the Test could end without a result. This match is crucial for India, as they face the threat of WTC elimination after losing four of their last five Tests. What if the Gabba Test ends in a draw?
Could India Miss the WTC Final If Rain Results in a Draw at The Gabba?
India currently sit third on the WTC points table with a PCT of 57.29, with three Tests remaining in the cycle, including the ongoing match at The Gabba. Given that Australia still have a two-match series against Sri Lanka ahead, India are in a must-win situation to keep their WTC final hopes alive.
If rain disrupts The Gabba Test, resulting in a draw, both India and Australia will earn four points each. This will lower India’s PCT to 55.88, though they will maintain their third-place standing. Meanwhile, Australia’s PCT will rise to 58.89, putting them in a stronger position.
South Africa, on the other hand, will continue to lead the table with a PCT of 63.33. A drawn match in Brisbane would significantly hurt India’s chances of reaching the WTC final, while giving Australia and South Africa a clearer path with two extra matches to solidify their positions.
WTC Points System:

– 6 points for a tie
– 4 points for a draw
– Teams are ranked based on their percentage of points earned.
– The top two teams qualify for the final at Lord’s in 2025.
– Points are penalized for slow over rates.
