India’s cricketing fraternity is abuzz with conversations about Mohammed Shami, one of the nation’s ace pacers. While fans eagerly await updates on his inclusion in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Down Under, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has confirmed his participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT). This dual focus highlights the challenges of balancing domestic and international commitments, especially for a player navigating recovery from a significant injury.
Mohammed Shami’s Inclusion in the Bengal Squad
The CAB recently announced a strong squad for the upcoming VHT, scheduled to kick off on December 21. Mohammed Shami and Mukesh Kumar will headline Bengal’s bowling attack, while young talent Sudip Kumar Gharami has been entrusted with captaincy duties. With these seasoned pacers in their arsenal, Bengal appears poised for a competitive campaign.
“India star pacers Mohammed Shami and Mukesh Kumar will form a strong Bengal bowling attack while the young Sudip Kumar Gharami will lead the team in the forthcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy,” a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) release said on Saturday.
BCCI’s Decision-Making Process
Shami’s fitness is being closely monitored by the BCCI’s Bengaluru-based Centre of Excellence. According to India captain Rohit Sharma, a cautious approach is being adopted to ensure that Shami is fully ready for the rigors of Test cricket. The emphasis lies on gradual progression rather than rushing his return to the international stage.
In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Shami played nine consecutive T20 matches, showcasing his fitness and form with 11 wickets. This performance underscores his resilience and determination, but the demands of Test cricket present a significantly different challenge.
Challenges of Balancing Domestic and International Commitments
The overlap of domestic and international cricket schedules often forces players like Shami to navigate a delicate balancing act. The BCCI’s decision to prioritize his participation in domestic tournaments reflects their strategic approach to workload management.
The VHT offers Bengal a chance to solidify its position in Indian domestic cricket. With Shami and Mukesh leading the bowling attack, the team has a formidable edge. Their opening game against Delhi in Hyderabad promises to be an exciting contest.

Shami’s Journey Back to Full Fitness
Shami’s recovery journey has been methodical, with milestones carefully monitored by experts. This meticulous approach is essential to ensure his long-term contribution to Indian cricket. Rohit Sharma recently stated that the Indian team management would tread with caution on the veteran pacer.
Rohit said, “There are some professionals monitoring, we will take a call based on what those guys feel. They are the ones watching him every game, how he pulls up after the game, after bowling four overs, standing for 20 overs. But the door is open for him to come and play anytime.”
Bengal’s campaign kicks off against Delhi on December 21 in Hyderabad. The team’s preparation has been thorough, with a clear focus on delivering strong performances.
