Isa Guha has apologized after referring to Jasprit Bumrah as a “primate” on Day 2 of the third Test at the Gabba. “Well, he’s the MVP, isn’t he? Most valuable primate, Jasprit Bumrah,” Guha had remarked during Fox Cricket commentary on Day 2, after Bumrah claimed a five-wicket haul.
“He is the one that’s going to do all the talking for India, and why so much focus was on him in the buildup to this Test match, and whether he would be fit.”
The use of the word ‘primate’ stands out, especially considering the historical tension between the two cricket teams dating back to the 2008 Monkeygate scandal. However, Guha, a former England cricketer, apologized on-air before play began on the third day.
“Yesterday in commentary, I used a word that can be interpreted in various ways,” she said.
“Firstly, I want to apologise for any offence caused. I hold myself to very high standards when it comes to empathy and respect for others, and if you listen to the full transcript, I meant only the highest praise for one of India’s greatest players, someone I deeply admire.”
“I am an advocate for equality and have spent my career focusing on inclusion and understanding within the game. I was trying to highlight the significance of his achievements but chose the wrong word, and for that, I am truly sorry.”
“As someone who is also … of South Asian heritage, I hope people would recognise there was no other intention or malice there. I hope this doesn’t overshadow what has been a great Test match so far and I look forward to seeing how it progresses. Once again, I am really, really sorry.”
Jasprit Bumrah put up an outstanding performance at the Gabba
In the third Test at the Gabba, Jasprit Bumrah delivered a remarkable performance, taking six wickets for 76 runs in 28 overs. This effort was pivotal in restricting Australia to 445 runs in their first innings.
Bumrah’s exceptional bowling not only showcased his skill but also set a new record, becoming the first Indian bowler to achieve eight five-wicket hauls in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia).
